Awe and Shock

This evening was a real treat. I was trying to prepare for a long day-trip for Saturday but I kept getting sidetracked with an amazing show by Ma Nature. At sunset, while grilling some bratwurst to wrap in foil for the following day’s dinner, the sky began to glow and I peered around the garage to see some magnificent mammatus clouds. They started out glowing gold then turned to an eerie pinkish-purple.

Later in the evening when I should have been loading chairs and life jackets into the Jeep, instead I drove up onto Wood Hill north of Price to witness and photograph a lightning storm south of here. The storm never got very close to town–I enjoyed watching it from a safe distance. Strikes were hitting all over the San Rafael Swell and the Book Cliffs. I spent an hour trying to capture many of the lightning strikes, giddy when the camera’s shutter was open during a strike and cursing when it was not.
